Today In Swim Class We Did Math!.....
Some students may be coming home and saying exactly that. In some of the activities that we will be doing this year we are bringing in some of the ideas from the classroom (i.e. Math & English) and combining them with some of our swimming skills and activities.
Many students will benefit greatly from this because of the different way that information is presented to them. The Multiple Intelligences Theory explains the many different types of learners there are and the way they learn best and which niche they will excel in (more explanation at this site).
Using this method my hope and intention is that students will increase their classroom achievement through doing inter-disciplinary activities and also increase their learning in the pool by doing the skills with a new "twist."

Increase Your Physical Activity and Do Better In School?!?!?!?!?!
According to recent research academic achievement is linked with physical activity. What this means is that students that are more physically active in their lifestyle tend to do better in school and also on standardized tests. Giving children the opportunity to be active at a moderate to vigorous level will help them achieve a greater quality of life.
So get up and get active! There are more benefits than just creating a healthier body!

Lending A Helping Hand In Swim Class
The 2nd and 3rd graders have started their year by learning and reinforcing basic water skills that are necessary to becoming more proficient swimmers (i.e. dunking, bubbles, floating, and gliding). On top of practicing the skills students are given a chance to become a teacher to one of their classmates. Using a checklist provided to the students each pair takes turns practicing the skill, their partner watches the skill and then tells them if they followed all of the points on the checklist. By doing this students take a more active role in the learning of their classmates and also learn to look a skill from a different point of view (the teacher view) and help themselves learn the skill. During these lessons students are more involved and have shown great improvements in their skill level.
